Traveling Internationally? You Must Read This!

Picture
If you are traveling internationally and do not have the proper travel documents required by your home country and destination countries, you will not be allowed to travel and you will not be compensated for the missed travel opportunity. Different countries have different travel requirements and document requirements, depending on your country of citizenship (meaning - the country's passport you are travelling with). You are entirely responsible for having the correct travel documents for your trip. Always have a passport book for any international travel, whether via airline cruise ship, road, train, etc. Bottom line, if you are crossing any international border into another country, have a valid passport and any other travel document required by the country you are entering. Observe the following basic rules:

PASSPORT
  • Passport book - This is required for all international travel. Passport card, birth certificate, drivers license will not substitute
  • Current - A valid passport must be current within 6 months after completion of travel. If your passport will expire within 6 months of your travel date, you must renew it now!
  • Correct Name - The name on your travel documents (tickets, boarding pass, booking confirmations, etc.) must agree with what is in your passport. Ensure name spelling is an exact match to your passport. Traveler is required and responsible to supply correct information (name spelling, date of birth, etc) IN WRITING to the agent or in web forms when making a booking. If requested, please supply a clear picture or scanned copy of the passport page to clearly show these personal information to aid in correct booking. Name corrections after the fact can be costly and is solely the financial responsibility of the traveler.  NOTE: Middle name/initials are optional, but it is good practice to include it.
  • Blank Pages - A valid passport must also have at least one blank page available so foreign entry officials can affix the appropriate stamps.
US Citizens may apply for new or renewal passport at https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/apply-renew-passport/how-to-apply.html or CLICK HERE
All others, please consult the appropriate ministry or department in your country for passports.

VISAS
  • Depending on your country of citizenship, you may be required to have a visa or other travel document before you are allowed entry into those countries. The State Department website (travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel.html) is a great source, as are individual country websites. Several airlines feature online tools to help you find passport and visa information. I use the Skyteam travel document site (skyteam.traveldoc.aero). If you are cruising on Royal Caribbean, CLICK HERE for international travel documents information

CHILDREN TRAVELING INTERNATIONALLY
  • If a minor is traveling without one or both parents, documents such as a notarized letter from a non-traveling parent or parents must be supplied before the child is allowed to travel with a parent/grandparent/friend/other relative. Airlines and cruise lines will tell you what documentation is needed if the minor is not from a two-parent family; Check with your carrier or Travel Agent/Advisor to get the most accurate and relevant information.
TRAVELING TO OR THROUGH THE US WITH A FOREIGN PASSPORT?
  • Depending on your country of citizenship (country that issued your passport) you may or may nor need a visa to enter the US, even if you are just passing through to another country. CLICK HERE to find out if you need a visa and what type of visa you need (link: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas.html )
  • it is the responsibility of every traveler to know what travel document is required for each destination and to obtain them.
